These are products that can offer an easy-to-manage diversified portfolio in a single fund. They may contain many different asset classes, including stocks, bonds, and short-term investments. While different funds are arranged according to different asset allocations, what they all do is provide you with the opportunity to own a diversified portfolio with just one fund.
Depending on your retirement savings plan, there are two options to consider: Target Date Funds which are based on an anticipated retirement date and Target Allocation Funds that are based on a risk tolerance and time horizon.
Note: The performance data featured represents past performance, which is no guarantee of future results. Investment return and principal value of an investment will fluctuate, therefore you may have a gain or loss when you sell your shares. Current performance may be higher or lower than the performance data quoted. Click on an investment to view quarter end returns, risk, fees and expenses. 1,2,3,4.

Learn the plan basics - including eligibility - of each retirement savings plan offered by your employer.
You are immediately eligible to enroll in the Plan.
All employees may make voluntary contributions to the Brandeis University 403(b) Plan at any time. Such contributions and any earnings are exempted from state and federal taxation until collected as income through a distribution. For more detailed information, please refer to the Summary Plan Description for the Brandeis University 403(b) Plan.
All regular faculty who are scheduled to work half-time or more and all regular staff scheduled to work half time or more for not less than 39 weeks per year are eligible to participate in the basic retirement plan upon completion of one year of service and attainment of 21 years of age. The one year of service requirement may be waived for employees who were employed for at least one year in a half-time or more position at a higher education institution immediately preceding the employee's date of employment at Brandeis (up to three months lapse in time between prior employment and Brandeis employment is allowed). University and employee required contributions are defined in the Contribution section below. Since enrolling in the plan is voluntary, employees must apply for this benefit. Employees may delay participation: however, University contributions begin as of the date of employee participation and will not be made retroactive to the date of initial eligibility.
To enroll in the Brandeis University Retirement Plan, there are five action steps to complete:
Step 1: Click Enroll Now at the top of this page and follow the steps to set up your Username and Password.
Step 2: Elect the percentage you would like to contribute to the plan.
Step 3: Select your Retirement Service Provider - Fidelity Investments or TIAA. You can elect to have all of your contributions directed to one provider, or a combination of both.
Step 4: Choose your investment options through your chosen service provider. Investment choices for Fidelity accounts can be made during the enrollment process. For TIAA accounts, investment elections must be made through TIAA. You will receive a prompt to go to the TIAA website at the end of the enrollment process if you have chosen TIAA as a provider.
Step 5: Be sure to designate your beneficiaries with each of your chosen service provider(s).
Once enrolled in the University Retirement Plan you may not suspend or discontinue your required contributions while employed.
All employees may make voluntary contributions to the Brandeis University 403(b) Plan at any time. Such contributions and any earnings are exempted from state and federal taxation until collected as income through a distribution.
If you are age 50 or older, you have the ability to make additional contributions to your plan, up to the current IRS dollar limits. View the limits here: IRS DOLLAR LIMITS
You have access to a range of investment choices in your plan, including conservative, moderately conservative, and aggressive funds. We encourage you to take an active role in your plan and choose investment options that best suit your goals, time horizon, and risk tolerance.
Default Investment Option: If you do not select specific investment options in the plan, your contributions will be invested in a Vanguard Lifecycle Fund.
When you are "vested" in your savings, it effectively means the money is yours to keep. You are always 100% vested in both your own contributions as well as employer contributions to your plan, as well as any earnings on them.
Your beneficiary or beneficiaries will inherit your account in the event of your death. You should consider identifying a beneficiary when you enroll in your plan, and updating the information if you experience a life-changing event such as a marriage, divorce, birth of a child, or death in the family.
Fidelity's Online Beneficiaries Service, available through NetBenefits® offers a straightforward, convenient process that takes just minutes.
Go to 'Profile' in the navigation bar at the top of your NetBenefits® page and click on the 'Summary tab' and then 'Beneficiaries'.
To designate or change beneficiaries with TIAA, visit www.tiaa.org/brandeis.
You are generally allowed to withdraw money from your plan when you leave your employer, or retire. Age 59½ withdrawals are only available on voluntary contributions. Also you may be eligible for a distribution if you have a financial hardship as defined by your plan. Withdrawals may be subject to income taxes and, if they occur prior to you becoming age 59½, a 10% early withdrawal tax penalty.
For more information about withdrawals, call your chosen service provider.

Investing involves risk, including risk of loss.
Footnotes 1, 2, 3 and 4 below pertain to the performance tables located on the Investment Options tab:
1 Stock markets are volatile and can fluctuate significantly in response to company, industry, political, regulatory, market, or economic developments. Investing in stock involves risks, including the loss of principal.
2Total returns are historical and include change in share price and reinvestment of dividends and capital gains, if any. These figures do not include the effect of sales charges, if any, as these fees are waived for contributions made through your retirement plan. If sales charges were included, returns would have been lower. Life of fund figures are from the inception date to the period shown. For unitized funds, the inception date shown may be that of the fund's underlying investment option. For non-mutual fund pools and trusts whose strategies may be offered to multiple clients, and whose returns may be based on a composite, the inception date shown may be the beginning date of the composite's returns.
3In general, the bond market is volatile, and fixed income securities carry interest rate risk. (As interest rates rise, bond prices usually fall, and vice versa. This effect is usually more pronounced for longer-term securities.) Fixed income securities also carry inflation risk, liquidity risk, call risk, and credit and default risks for both issuers and counterparties. Unlike individual bonds, most bond funds do not have a maturity date, so holding them until maturity to avoid losses caused by price volatility is not possible.
4The target date funds are designed for investors expecting to retire around the year indicated in each fund's name. The funds are managed to gradually become more conservative over time as they approach the target date. The investment risk of each target date fund changes over time as the fund's asset allocation changes. The funds are subject to the volatility of the financial markets, including that of equity and fixed income investments in the U.S. and abroad, and may be subject to risks associated with investing in high-yield, small-cap, and foreign securities. Principal invested is not guaranteed at any time, including at or after the funds' target dates.
