Learn the plan basics - including eligibility - of each retirement savings plan offered by your employer.
There is no waiting period. You can enroll in the Samford University 403(b) Plan at any time. Click the Enroll Now button on this page to get started. You will also need to obtain a Salary Reduction Agreement and return it to the Samford University Human Resources Office. Your enrollment becomes effective once you indicate how much you'd like to contribute, also known as the deferral. You will generally begin to see your contributions deducted from your paycheck in the next pay period, or as soon as administratively possible.
Through automatic payroll deduction, you can contribute between 1% and 75% of your eligible pay as pretax, Roth, or a combination of the two, up to the annual IRS dollar limits. Combined, your total contribution cannot exceed 75% of your eligible pay.
Your Employer helps your retirement savings grow. You are eligible for the Employer match on January 1 or July 1 after you have been employed at Samford University for 12 months with 1000 hours.
Please note that for those employees hired after January 1, 2013, Samford will match 100% of each pretax and after-tax (Roth) dollar (including catch-up contributions) you contribute on the first 3% of pay that you defer to the Plan. In any event, the Samford University's matching contribution may not exceed 3% of your compensation. If you were hired after January 1, 2013, your Employer will also make an annual discretionary contribution to the Plan, regardless of the contribution you may make to the Plan, according to the following schedule:

With Roth contributions, you can make after-tax payroll contributions to your plan and withdraw those contributions tax-free (subject to the terms of the plan). Your earnings may also be withdrawn tax-free if you have a qualified distribution. A qualified distribution, in this case, is one that is taken five tax years after the year of your first Roth contribution and after you have reached age 59½, become disabled, or died.
Through automatic payroll contributions, you can contribute from 1% to 75% of your eligible pay as designated Roth contributions, up to the annual IRS dollar limits.
Unlike a Roth IRA, there are no income limits to be eligible for a Roth 403(b) option within an employer-sponsored retirement plan. Generally, a Roth contribution may be beneficial if you expect your tax rate in retirement will be higher than it had been during the years you contributed.
For more information visit www.fidelity.com/atwork/roth.
If you are age 50 or older, you have the ability to make additional contributions to your plan, up to the current IRS dollar limits. View the limits here: IRS DOLLAR LIMITS
You are always 100% vested in your own contributions to the Samford University 403(b) Plan. Your Employer's matching contributions and discretionary contributions vest according to the following schedule:

Your beneficiary or beneficiaries will inherit your account in the event of your death. You should consider identifying a beneficiary when you enroll in your plan, and updating the information if you experience a life-changing event such as a marriage, divorce, birth of a child, or death in the family.
Fidelity's Online Beneficiaries Service, available through NetBenefits® offers a straightforward, convenient process that takes just minutes.
Go to 'Profile' in the navigation bar at the top of your NetBenefits® page and click on the 'Summary tab' and then 'Beneficiaries'.
You are generally allowed to withdraw money from your plan when you terminate your employment, retire, or reach age 59½. Withdrawals may be subject to income taxes and, if they occur prior to you becoming age 59½, a 10% early withdrawal tax penalty.
For more information, call the Fidelity Retirement Services Center at 1-800-343-0860.
Although your plan account is intended for the future, you may borrow from your account for any reason. Generally, plan rules allow you to borrow up to 50% of your vested account balance.
The minimum loan amount is $1,000, and a loan must not exceed $50,000. Any outstanding loan balances from the previous 12 months may reduce the amount you have available to borrow. You then pay the money back into your account, plus interest, through after tax payroll deductions.
You may have one loan outstanding at a time. The cost to initiate a loan is $50.00, and there is a quarterly maintenance fee of $6.25. The initiation and maintenance fees are deducted directly from your plan account.
Note: If you fail to repay your loan (based on the original terms of the loan), it will be considered in "default" and treated as a distribution, making it subject to income tax and possibly to a 10% early withdrawal tax penalty. Defaulted loans may also impact your eligibility to request additional loans.
If you have retirement savings in another employer's plan or in an IRA, consolidating accounts may help make it easier to manage your savings but there are several options. Be sure to consider all your available options and the applicable fees and features of each before moving your retirement assets.
If you're not sure about the best option for you, talk to a Fidelity representative today. They can explain each option in greater detail so you can make the best choice for your specific needs.
Online, on the phone, or in person, you have access to your account the way you want it. Log in online to NetBenefits® virtually 24/7 or call Fidelity at 1-800-343-0860 to speak with a representative or use the automated voice response system.
Fidelity Retirement Planners provide free one-on-one guidance for participants in your plan. You can also contact Fidelity for a statement of your account by calling 1-800-343-0860 or visiting NetBenefits®.

** The current yield of the money market mutual fund listed above reflects the current earnings of the fund, while the total return refers to a specific past holding period.
*** The yield without applicable waivers or reimbursements, whenever Fidelity is subsidizing all or a portion of the fund's expenses as of the current reporting period. Absent such waivers or reimbursements, the returns would have been lower. Waivers and/or reimbursements may be discontinued any time.
Investing involves risk, including risk of loss.
Footnotes 1, 2, 3 and 4 below pertain to the performance tables located on the Investment Options tab:
1 Stock markets are volatile and can fluctuate significantly in response to company, industry, political, regulatory, market, or economic developments. Investing in stock involves risks, including the loss of principal.
2Total returns are historical and include change in share price and reinvestment of dividends and capital gains, if any. These figures do not include the effect of sales charges, if any, as these fees are waived for contributions made through your retirement plan. If sales charges were included, returns would have been lower. Life of fund figures are from the inception date to the period shown. For unitized funds, the inception date shown may be that of the fund's underlying investment option. For non-mutual fund pools and trusts whose strategies may be offered to multiple clients, and whose returns may be based on a composite, the inception date shown may be the beginning date of the composite's returns.
3In general, the bond market is volatile, and fixed income securities carry interest rate risk. (As interest rates rise, bond prices usually fall, and vice versa. This effect is usually more pronounced for longer-term securities.) Fixed income securities also carry inflation risk, liquidity risk, call risk, and credit and default risks for both issuers and counterparties. Unlike individual bonds, most bond funds do not have a maturity date, so holding them until maturity to avoid losses caused by price volatility is not possible.
4Target Date Funds are an asset mix of stocks, bonds and other investments that automatically becomes more conservative as the fund approaches its target retirement date and beyond. Principal invested is not guaranteed.
