If you are hired on or after January 1, 2019, you are eligible to receive non-elective and matching contributions from USC after satisfying a one year eligibility period in an eligible job classification. Use Workday, to set up your payroll deductions. You will also use Workday to stop or change your contributions.
After satisfying a one year eligibility period in which you work in an eligible job classification, USC will make a 5% non-elective employer contribution to your account whether or not you elect to make a contribution. USC will also match one-to-one the first 1-5% of your pre-tax or Roth contributions to the Matched component of the 403(b) Plan. USC's contributions are made on eligible compensation up to the IRS cap.

When you are "vested" in your savings, it effectively means the money is yours to keep. You are always 100% vested in all contributions you make to your plan, as well as any earnings on them. If you were hired prior to January 1, 2012, you are also 100% vested in all USC Contributions.

*Effective January 1, 2012, the USC non-elective contribution is subject to a four year graded vesting schedule (25% per credited year of service) for new employees hired on or after January 1, 2012. You will earn a year of a vesting credit for each year calendar year in which you are credited with at least 1,000 hours of service. Each year of vesting credit earns you 25% ownership in the non-elective portion of the USC contribution. The USC matching contribution, the portion that matches one-to-one your 1-5% contribution, is structured to meet the IRS 401(m) "safe harbor" criteria and is 100% vested at all times.
Your beneficiary or beneficiaries will inherit your account in the event of your death. You should consider identifying a beneficiary when you enroll in your plan, and updating the information if you experience a life-changing event such as marriage, divorce, birth of a child, or death in the family. If you are married, your spouse is automatically the beneficiary of 100% of your 401(a) account whether or not you have designated this, unless a notarized spousal waiver has been completed.

Go to 'Profile' in the navigation bar at the top of your NetBenefits® page and click on the 'Summary tab' and then 'Beneficiaries'.
You are generally allowed to withdraw money from your plan when you leave your employer, retire, or become permanently disabled. Withdrawals may be subject to income taxes and, if they occur prior to you becoming age 59½, a 10% early withdrawal tax penalty.
Participants in the USC retirement plans must begin receiving annual minimum required distributions (MRD) when they attain age 72. However, participants who are still working at USC can defer MRD payments from their USC accounts, thus the MRD generally does not need to start until the later of when the participant
However, Federal tax law does not allow participants who own 5% or more of their employer (shares of stock, partnership interest, or sole proprietor) to defer the start date of their MRD beyond when they become age 72 even when they continue to work. The MRD must begin by April 1st of the year following the year in which you become subject to the above rules. Once you become subject to the MRD requirements, you will need to contact Fidelity to make any elections. If no action is taken USC will direct Fidelity to force out the MRD payment.
Although your plan account is intended for the future, you may borrow from your account for any reason. Generally, the USC Defined Contribution Retirement Plan allows you to borrow up to 50% of your vested account balance.
The minimum loan amount is $1,000, and loans must not exceed $50,000 from sources under all plans sponsored by the University. The highest outstanding loan balances over the previous 12 months may reduce the amount you have available to borrow. You then pay the money back into your account, plus interest, through after-tax payroll deductions. The maximum period for a general loan is five years; 10 years for the documented purchase of a primary residence. (Notarized spousal consent is required on all loans).
You may have one outstanding loan at a time from all sources within the USC Retirement Savings Program. There is a seven day waiting period between paying off a loan and requesting another one. Notarized spousal consent is required. The cost to initiate a loan is $35.00, and there is a quarterly maintenance fee of $3.75. The initiation and maintenance fees are deducted directly from your plan account.
Note: If you terminate employment before paying off your loan, you must make arrangements with Fidelity to continue payments directly. If you fail to repay your loan (based on the original terms of the loan), it will be considered in "default" and treated as a distribution, making it subject to income tax and also to a 10% early withdrawal tax penalty if you are under 59½. Defaulted loans are considered to be outstanding and will affect your eligibility to request additional loans. Be sure you understand the Plan guidelines before you initiate a loan from your plan account.
If you have retirement savings in another employer's plan or in an IRA, consolidating accounts may help make it easier to manage your savings but there are several options. Be sure to consider all your available options and the applicable fees and features of each before moving your retirement assets.
